Discover the intriguing origins of Kyle, Texas and how it got its name from a generous donation of land by Fergus Kyle.

The Fascinating Story Behind the Naming of Kyle, Texas

As an expert on the history of Kyle, Texas, I am often asked about the origins of the city's name. It's a question that has intrigued many, and the answer is a fascinating one that involves a man named Fergus Kyle, a generous donation of land, and a series of unfortunate events. The story begins in the late 1800s when the International and Great Northern Railroad built a line from Austin to San Antonio. This new railway brought about the need for a new city to serve as a warehouse and hub for the railroad. It was at this time that Fergus Kyle, along with David Moore's family, donated 200 acres of land to build this new city. But who was Fergus Kyle? He was a wealthy businessman from Mississippi who had made his fortune in the cotton industry.

Unfortunately, due to the Civil War and the loss of his bond investments, Kyle's wealth was greatly diminished. In search of a fresh start, he decided to move to Texas and help establish this new city that would bear his name. The city of Kyle was officially founded in 1880 on the land donated by Fergus Kyle and the Moore family. However, it wasn't until 1881 that the city was officially named Kyle. The name was chosen as a tribute to Fergus Kyle and his contribution to the establishment of the city.

The Kyle Cemetery

One interesting fact about Kyle is that it is home to not one, but two cemeteries.

The first is the Kyle Cemetery, which was established after two burials were carried out on the ground. Colonel Claiborne Kyle, Fergus Kyle's brother, generously donated fifteen acres of land for this "community cemetery". Today, this cemetery serves as the final resting place for many of Kyle's African-American citizens. The second cemetery, Skyview Cemetery, is located just north of Kyle Cemetery and covers approximately four acres. This well-maintained cemetery is the final resting place for many of Kyle's African-American citizens.

The Kyle Hot Air Balloon Festival

One of the most popular events in Kyle is the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival.

This event takes place over a weekend in August and draws in thousands of visitors from all over Texas. The festival includes hot air balloon rides in the morning, where balloons take off at dawn and fly over Kyle, as well as a "glow" at night, where tethered hot air balloons twinkle against the night sky over Lake Kyle.

As an expert on the history of Kyle, I am proud to share this fascinating story with others.
